another 2013 goal.

out of sight out of mind…right?

i stopped looking at my credit card statement more than a year ago because it was depressing. i don’t have a shopping problem. in fact, i hate shopping. but i don’t manage my money well. i have a credit card bill that is too large to stomach [for me] and a looming student loan that should have been paid off years ago.

so this year, amongst my other 25 goals [not resolutions!] i have going, i have pledged to pay off my debt and increase my savings. i stumbled on this website last week and it was perfect timing. she paid off two student loans and two credit card bills. if she can do it on a $33,000 salary, i can do it on mine. no, i am not telling you what i make.

so last weekend, i made a list of everything i am allowed to spend money on. granted, some of the items are a little unusual to be spending money on while trying to save; but, in my case, they are necessary. like bridesmaids dresses. they don’t fall into the ‘clothes’ category. they fall into the ‘i am blessed to have friends that want me to be in their wedding, so i will happily buy a bridesmaids dress for you while i am trying to save money’ category. see the difference?

with this, there are some major changes that have to take place. the biggest one…eating out. that’s a no-go. i don’t do it a TON during the week but the weekends it is hard not to. but that will force me to make some new recipes that i have been eyeing on pinterest.

and going out? meh. luckily, i am over the hump of ‘i’m young and i love to go out and get drunk every night’ so it isn’t that big of a deal, but meeting up for happy hour is fun every now and then. BUT with my newly decorated living room [pics will come..promise], i can invite some girls over to my place for a BYOB night.

i am only telling you guys this so i can hold myself accountable. who wants to join me?? would you be interested if i tracked it on here? like monthly or something?

  1. I just posted my goals (not resolutions) for 2013 too! Included in mine are paying off my credit cards, decreasing my student loans and increasing my savings. I'd be interested in doing a monthly or quarterly finance check-in with you (and maybe some other bloggers if they are interested). Let me know what you think!

  2. Ben and I are tackling our student loans this year too. We have over $70,000 so I don't think we'll get them all done this year (or even the next), but it feels so good to be on the right path!

  3. I'm ALL ABOUT paying off as much of my loans as possible this year. And not spending money on anything that I can't eat.

  4. Not eating out as much will be a debt saver!! I recently paid off a credit card after promising myself to cook at home and make my own damn coffee… even though I love Starbucks with half my heart. Good luck!

  5. I'm currently in the midst of a spending freeze that will lift on February 15 and be reinstated on March 20 for another 45 days.

I'm trying to be more mindful of what I buy and why.

Good luck to you. You can do it! I'd be interested if you posted updates.

  6. I have about 50,000 in student loans from my master's degree that I have deferred twice. I have about $15,000 in credit card debt. I haven't even used them in a year, and have no idea where they are. I was just horrible with buying stuff, charging stuff, paying it off, and never paying it off and eliminating it all together. My goal this year is to have $0 credit card debt by December 2013. So far, I've paid about $1200.

  7. Great goal. You've inspired me to start budgeting a little better and get these damn loans paid off. I got the credit cards done, but now it's the loans haunting me. I know I'll be so much happier without them in the long run…

  8. This is definitely one of my goals this year as well. Thanks for the link to the new website – she's definitely inspiring!

  10. I'm new here and I love your honesty. I'm in the same boat and it's nice to know I'm not alone. Here's to a successful 2013!

  11. Great idea. I've got about $5,000AU remaining on my student loan. Sigh. It's been seven years of paying it off so far. But… it's going to be so liberating once it's paid off. And it'll be the same for you. Stick to your goals and 1) your finances will be a whole heap better; 2) you're probably going to be the gosh darndest best cook within a few months!! x
